LMS Awareness Day

Today, July 15th is Leiomyosarcoma Awareness Day!

Leiomyosarcoma (LMS) is a rare and aggressive type of soft tissue sarcoma that arises from smooth muscle cells, which are found in involuntary muscles such as those in the uterus, gastrointestinal tract and blood vessels.

It occurs in about bout 1 case per 100,000 people per year. It affects fewer than 12,000 -15,000 people in the U.S. at any given time. Compare that to breast cancer which affects 4.1 million women or prostrate cancer which affects 3.5 million men.

Because it is so rare, there is little research and few treatments. Since 2006, Leiomyosarcoma Support & Direct Research Foundation (LMSDR) has awarded over $3 million in research funding specifically aimed at understanding and treating LMS.

LMSDR operates as an all-volunteer organization, ensuring that nearly every dollar raised is directed toward research efforts. Our mission focuses on funding promising LMS research, providing patient education and support, and fostering collaboration between patients and researchers to find effective treatments.

Our mission is to empower patients with information and support, fund groundbreaking LMS research and provide a bridge between patients and researchers, to collaborate on finding a cure.
