Sue Ann Maple passed away peacefully on December 4, 2023, surrounded by her family. She was born in York, Pennsylvania on August 14, 1958, to Sarah A. Strayer Knaub and John C. Knaub. Sue lived her life with passion and purpose, and she will be greatly missed.  

She is survived by her husband, Steven, her children, Olivia Holmes and Amanda Maple, her son-in-law, Jason Holmes, her granddaughter, Vivienne Holmes, her brother, John Knaub, and her dogs, Eli and Cooper.  

She was preceded in death by her parents and her younger brother, James Knaub.

Sue received her undergraduate degree from West Virginia University and also completed a Master’s in Public Administration at W.V.U. In 1994, she received her Ph.D. in Higher Education from Indiana University.

Sue spent most of her career in medical education, starting as an Assistant Professor and Director of the Primary Care Initiative and Office of Primary Care Education at the I.U. School of Medicine. She was intimately involved in revamping the medical school curriculum, teaching and evaluating residents, and preparing and submitting grants for medical education. Later in her career, she worked in the Dean's Office continuing to be involved in the education of medical professionals. She authored many publications, presentations, and grants.

Sue was an avid runner, gardener, and bird watcher. She had a passion for making silver jewelry and spent many weekends at local craft shows selling her creations. Fused glass caught her attention, and in a short time she was creating and selling her own fused glass jewelry and art.  

Sue was an active member of several churches, most recently First United Methodist Church in Austin. She was a Sunday School teacher, participated in Vacation Bible School, adult bible study, and she was active in numerous church committees. Her passion was church mission activities. She was active in efforts to shelter and support the homeless, stock food pantries, and provide Christmas gifts for families.

Sue also loved to travel. Her travels took her throughout the U.S., Central and South America, and Europe. Everywhere she went, she was on the lookout for local art that reflected the culture of the people.  

The Celebration of Life in Austin is planned for January 20, 2024, from 11 am to 1 pm, at The Gabriels Funeral Chapel and Crematory in Georgetown, TX.
